Minimum Qualifications This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending on qualifications. Only one application is required.
Substation Electrician I: Graduation from high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year experience in a related field Thirty semester hours of college credit in power technology, electronics, communications technology, industrial technology or related field may substitute for one year of the general required experience with a minimum
substitution of one year.
Licenses and Certifications Required: Texas Class A CDL Drivers License.
Physical Requirements:
* Ability to work in confined areas.
* Ability to learn principles of electrical theory as applied to transformers/ switches, etc. for hook-ups.
Substation Electrician II: High School diploma or GED, plus two (2) years experience in maintenance or modification of electrical substations. Thirty semester hours of college credit in power technology, electronics, communications technology, industrial technology or related field may substitute for one year of the general required experience with a minimum substitution of one year.
Licenses and Certifications Required: Valid Texas Class A CDL Drivers License.

Substation Electrician III: Graduation from high school or equivalent , plus four (4) years experience in a field related to the job. Thirty semester hours of college credit in power technology, electronics, communications technology, engineering technology, industrial technology or related field may substitute for one year of the general required experience with a maximum substitution of one year.
Licenses or Certifications: Valid Texas Class A CDL Drivers License.

Preferred Qualifications
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Read profiles and blueprints.
2. Record data on appropriate form/log, etc. Order/issue supplies, parts, etc. Maintain inventory of supplies, tools, equipment, etc. Review work for accuracy & completeness.
3. Install protective relays. Install wire, conduit, coaxial cable, etc. Install electrical metering devices. Install, repair & maintain substation electrical equipment e.g. circuit breakers, transformers, OCBs, switches, motors, etc.
4. Connect/disconnect voltage regulators.
5. Use various electrician hand tools e.g. snips, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, etc.
6. Pull wire, conduit, cable, etc. Splice electrical wiring i.e. strip insulation, twist wires together, solder, tape, apply terminal caps, etc.
7. Repair & maintain power transformers by replacing faulty or worn parts.
8. Operate electronic testing equipment. Operate substation switching equipment. Oil circuit breakers & transformers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
* Knowledge of safety rules and procedures when working with energized electrical systems.
* Knowledge of installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical equipment, apparatus, and instruments.
* Knowledge of the laws, theories, rules and standards pertaining to electrical construction and maintenance.
* Knowledge of electronic schematics and blueprints sufficient to interpret and modify/design as needed.
* Knowledge of electrical circuits and switching.
* Knowledge of all types of transformer connections and procedures for phasing transformer banks in with other banks.
* Knowledge of tools, equipment, and methods used in the maintenance and repair of electrical substations.
* Knowledge of theory/methods/procedures in construction, maintenance & repair of electric utility distribution systems.
* Skill in use of tools & various types of test equipment required to test & calibrate electric & electronic meters.
* Skill in establishing/maintaining effective working relationships with other city employees and the general public.
* Skill in use of tools/equipment required to perform troubleshooting & repair of electrical/electronic instruments.
* Skill in use of procedures/special tools & equipment used in preventive maintenance programs/electronic repairs.
* Skill in reading, interpreting, and preparing electric and electronic diagrams and instruments.
* Skill in responding quickly in emergency situations.
* Skill in performing strenuous work under emergency and all weather conditions.
* Skill in reading blueprints, sketches and drawings.
* Skill in drawing schematics of control circuits.
* Skill in use of tools & equipment used in utility downtown network, commercial service and residential service.
* Skill in tapping, splicing cable. Ability to work in confined areas.
