Job Description:

Job Summary:
A qualified anesthesia nurse practitioner involved in the administration of anesthesia related services as delineated by the Department of Anesthesia. 

Essential Functions of the position include but are not limited to:
  • Evaluates the patient pre-operatively by interviewing and examining the patient; assesses data and selects appropriate anesthetic. 
  • Works in collaboration with anesthesiologists, surgeons and other physicians and medical professionals to deliver anesthesia for medical and surgical procedures.
  • Cares for patient before, during and after a medical procedure or surgery by performing a patient assessment, prepare the patient for anesthesia, administers and maintains anesthesia to ensure proper sedation and pain management, oversees patient recovery from anesthesia and care for the patient’s immediate post-operative needs.
  • Administers anesthetics in accordance with clinical privileges; performs medical non-medical procedures, i.e., IV insertion, intubation, induction of anesthesia, emergence of general anesthesia; placement of arterial and central venous access lines, administers various types of anesthetic blocks, maintains hemodynamic and electrolyte balance, administers epidurals and secures airways in routine and acute medical situations. 
  • Works in the operating room and is able to perform general local mac and regional anesthesia for patients, including patients who are undergoing surgery. 
  • The CRNA may have complete responsibility or may have share responsibility with Anesthesiologists in a medically directed model.
  • Works in area of anesthesiology, from general surgery to the delivery room. Prepares patients; takes a medical history; explains procedures; administers anesthetics; monitors the patient during surgery and keeps a record of the course of anesthesia, within the scope of the CRNA’s credentials/privileges.  Responds to critical situations arising during treatment and works with a healthcare team to ensure patient safety.
  • Prepare drugs, maintains accounting of controlled substances; maintains and evaluates anesthesia equipment to sure safe operating conditions.
  • Assists in assurance that patient care requirements are met.
  • Participates in the department Quality Management functions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.‚Äč

Job Requirements:

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  1. Holds current state licensure as a registered nurse in the state (where employed by NorthStar Anesthesia/Mira Healthcare) complies with the applicable state statutory or regulatory requirements of the State Board of Nursing for the state of employment.
  2. Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs or its predecessor.
  3. Holds current status as an Advanced Practice Nurse Anesthetist by the State Board of Nursing for the State of employment.
  4. Complies with one of the following requirements regarding certification eligibility, initial certification, or recertification:
    1. Meets criteria 1, and 2 above, and is waiting initial certification, or
    2. Is currently certified by the Council of Certification of Nurse Anesthetist or its predecessor.
    3. Is currently recertified by the Council of Certification of Nurse Anesthetist or its predecessor.
–   Insurable by an appropriate medical malpractice insurer for the limits required by the group, institution, or state.
–  Demonstrates current competency in those clinical responsibilities for which the candidate applies.
–  Knowledge of anesthesia principles, techniques and procedures and the ability to apply that knowledge to the clinical care of the patients.
–   CRNA may also be required to hold additional licensures, certifications and/or education as required by facility and/or state for which they are assigned.
–  Insurable by an appropriate medical malpractice insurer for the limits required by the group, institution, or state.
–  Advanced knowledge of physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology and the ability to apply this knowledge on a case-to-case basis.
–  Possess an attitude that fosters a respectful, non-threatening workplace environment. 
–  Skill in providing effective anesthesia services, assessing patient situations and taking effective courses of action in a timely manner.
–  Knowledge of anesthesia principles, techniques and procedures for patient cate and the ability to apply that knowledge to the clinical care of the patient.
–  Knowledge of the clinical environment and how the services and functions interact and the ability to apply that knowledge to the clinical care of the patient.
–  Adheres to the American Association of Nurse Anesthetist Standards of Practice and State Board of Nursing (state of employment).
–  Maintains a practice current with CDC, OSHA, JCAHO, and HIPPA standards in regards
–  Compassion in dealing with others
–  Professionalism and communication skills and the willingness to work as a team

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to perform fine manipulation, simple grasping, firm grasping and have a steady hand to intubate patients and perform medical non-surgical procedures, such as IV insertion, intubation, induction of anesthesia, emergence of general anesthesia, placement of arterial and central venous access lines, administer anesthetics and various types of anesthetic blocks, maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, administer epidurals and secure airways in routine and emergency situations.
