Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Admission, the Admission Counselor/Assistant Director is expected to become fully engaged in a broad range of recruitment and admission activities. The Admission Counselor/Assistant Director will develop and coordinate a strategic social media plan for the Office of Admission. Other activities may include but are not limited to coordinating the overnight hosting program or the tour guide program, representing the College to prospective students and their families, establishing relationships with high school counselors and teachers in promoting the College’s visibility, and counseling prospective students, their families and others with regard to applying for admission to the College.

Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as an integral member of the Admission team who is responsible for recruiting and enrolling exceptional students.

Develop, monitor, and coordinate a strategic plan for social media to various constituents.

Coordinate either the tour-guide or the overnight hosting program. This includes hiring, training, and supervising student coordinators to ensure smooth running of the program.

Support the mission of the Office of Admission in increasing the diversity of the applicant pool and enrolling class. Contribute to programming designed to meet this objective.

Participate in and assist with the planning and implementation of campus recruitment and yield activities and special programs.

Represent Harvey Mudd College to prospective students and their families, high school counselors, community members, and others at events on and off campus, and by visiting high schools across the nation.

Establish relationships with high school counselors and teachers to extend the visibility of the College.

Counsel prospective students, their families, high school counselors and others with regard to applying for admission to the College and advise them about the admission process and life at the College.

Keep current with academic program updates, requirements and offerings.

Interview prospective students.

Develop and maintain competency with using the Office of Admission database and online reading system. Read and evaluate applications for admission and participate fully in the selection process of candidates for admission.

Maintain focus on several activities at one time (multi-tasking) and anticipate seasonal variations in workload.

Maintain confidentiality of records, correspondence, and information, regardless of the format (e.g. electronic, phone calls).

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Licenses/Certificates: Valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the College's automobile insurance carrier.
  • Experience: Past experience with and interest in using social media as a strategic communication tool. It is not necessary to have been the leader of that experience.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education and Harvey Mudd College’s mission.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience that has resulted in an understanding and appreciation of highly selective admission is appealing but not required.


Position Characteristics

  • Hours: The regular business hours for this position are 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hours will vary due to need of the department and may require evenings and weekends.
  • Classification: This is a permanent, full-time, benefits-eligible exempt position.
  • Reporting: This position report to the Director of Admission
