HR Generalist


Buffalo State, State University of New York, seeks candidates for the position of HR Generalist

Under the general direction and guidance of the Associate Vice President for Human Resource Management, the HR Generalist is responsible for the following:

  • Performs tasks required to administer and execute human resource functions such as but not limited to compensation, benefits, leaves, time and attendance, performance management, training, emergency response, payroll, personnel, recruitment and reporting.
    • Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.
    • Maintains compliance with SUNY, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommends best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
    • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field.
    • Progressively responsible experience as a professional in human resource management.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of employment laws including state and federal employment
    • Experience working with human resource information systems and other web-based management systems.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
    • Proficiency in report writing software.
    • Excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
    • Ability to act with integrity and professionalism including sensitivity to personal and confidential information.
    • Ability to develop collegial working relationships with individuals at all organizational levels.
    • Demonstrated ability to organize work, set priorities, and work independently as well as part of a team.


Preferred Qualifications:


• Professional experience in human resource management in a public, unionized setting.
• Professional experience in human resource management in a higher education setting.
• Professional Human Resource Management Certification (i.e., PHRSHRM-CP, SPHR)
