Position Overview:

The Global Total Compensation Manager is an integral part of Room to Read’s People Operations team. This role can be based in one of our US or UK office locations (San Francisco, New York City, London), or remotely from CO, FL, MD, MA or VA. This position reports to the US-based People Operations Director, and plays a key role in the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of Room to Read’s market-based approach and total compensation philosophy focusing on equity and talent management. The Global Total Compensation Manager will lead organizational initiatives on compensation, share knowledge and develop the professional skills of the People Operations function around compensation-focused policies and practices, and create a broader understanding of compensation administration practices worldwide. The Global Total Compensation Manager must be a self-motivated team player who is committed to our cause and has a track record of leading organizational change management processes around compensation. The Manager will work closely with the worldwide People Operations team, including our People Operations Managers based in our country offices, in all aspects of this work. This role may have supervisor responsibilities for one to two direct reports.

   

Duties & Responsibilities:

Ongoing Pay Administration

  • Lead Room to Read’s international compensation program. For our global headquarters, this includes conducting annual benchmarking research, adjusting salary scales based on market analysis, and making compensation recommendations for new hires, new positions, promotions, and annual adjustments. 

Total Compensation Analysis

  • In addition to monetary compensation, lead a worldwide total compensation analysis (comparison between current offerings, statutory requirements, and market benchmark), including salary, benefits, allowances, and time-off policies with an overall aim of ensuring a cohesive and equitable compensation system across all Room to Read locations

  • Review non-cash benefits such as time off and leave programs to ensure alignment with both total compensation philosophy and local regulatory requirements

  • Provide oversight of global headquarters benefits and manage Benefits Administrator. Following a worldwide review process, make recommendations regarding country office benefits.

  • Conduct an analysis of current approaches, position-specific ranges vs salary scales and recommend sustainable approaches that support Room to Read’s evolving business needs

  • Review and recommend total compensation packages for staff hired for international and/or project-based assignments

  • Consider talent acquisition and retention strategies for designated key personnel on bilateral and multilateral funded project proposal

  • Review Room to Read’s International Assignment Policy and practices for ex-pats and TCN employees and project-based staff and make recommendations for changes

Job Analysis and Evaluation

  • Perform organization-wide job analysis and evaluation, focusing on how Room to Read categorizes and benchmarks roles

  • Conduct job analysis of all roles across Room to Read that documents the compensable factors including complexity, breadth, and exposure to systemically determine the value/worth of a job within Room to Read’s job hierarchy

  • Review and revamp current compensation tools to ensure a more consistent categorization and benchmarking approach that considers leveling, geographic scope (local vs global), and management vs. individual contributor (pathways for technical expertise)

  • Validate job evaluations with market data appropriate for Room to Read’s positions and context which considers all geographies

  • Support the ongoing acquisition of salary survey data based on the organization’s needs

Compensation Philosophy and Pay Practice Design

  • Review and provide recommendations on pay administration and practices including but not limited to: salary adjustments, including cost of living adjustments (COLA), market adjustments, promotion policy and cycles, and short-term incentives, including performance bonuses, step increases vs performance adjustments and recognition opportunities beyond monetary compensation

  • Provide recommendations for awarding short-term incentive pay (e.g. “spot awards”)

  • Partner with Internal Communications on rebranding and roll-out of Room to Read’s compensation philosophy once approved

Other

  • Partner with Finance to develop a framework for understanding the total cost associated with employing staff across locations

  • Leverage existing and new technology systems and solutions to streamline efforts and improve the effectiveness of our teams globally

  • Partner with worldwide People Ops team to understand country office pay practices and make recommendations based on pain points

  • Conduct internal technical training for People Ops Managers, informational sessions for Supervisors and all staff on Room to Read’s compensation philosophy

  • Perform other duties as required and necessary to ensure the success of the organization

Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Accounting, Business Administration, or equivalent work experience

  • 7-10 years experience working in Compensation with proficiency in compensation research, data analysis, and implementation on a global scale

  • Ability to consistently promote, support, work, and act in a manner in support of Room to Read’s vision, mission, and values

  • Ability to think strategically

  • Strong collaboration skills

  • Digital competency skills

  • Ability to manage and prioritize work in a fast-moving global environment and navigate ambiguity

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, especially translating technical concepts into plain English

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; advanced knowledge of MS Excel

  • Non-profit experience

  • US or UK Work Authorization, no sponsorship provided

Preferred

  • Experience working with Workday, or another HRMS 

  • Experience working in international development

  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP)

  • Experience mentoring and supervising staff
