Global Manager, Girls' Education & Gender Equality

Job Description

Position Overview:

Based in San Francisco, CA or Washington, DC, the Manager, Girls’ Education is a key member of the global Girls’ Education and Gender Equality Program (GEP) team which is part of Room to Read’s Program Design and Technical Assistance (PDTA) Department. The primary duties of this position are focused on supporting the global GEP team to expand its technical capacity in support of its strategic growth and vision, including providing logistical and programmatic support for special GEP projects; strengthening and managing knowledge-sharing and team communication; and assisting with program improvement and strategic partnerships.

This position will also support the GEP team with facilitating the design and contextualization of new curricula and program materials if appropriate.  The Manager reports directly to the worldwide Associate Director of Girls’ Education who is based in Room to Read’s San Francisco Headquarters.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Program Design, Management and Implementation (30%)

  • Serve as technical GEP lead on Room to Read’s financial education for girls (FELS) project. This includes overseeing the technical implementation of gender-responsive programmatic content across multiple countries and participating in partner meetings and internal project planning calls and tasks.
  • Lead the design and implementation of multimedia projects, including signature storybook characters and life skills videos embodying Room to Read’s gender-transformative life skills work.
  • Support the implementation of new custom projects, including multimedia life skills projects focused on book publishing and videos.
  • Under the leadership of the Sr. Director, GEP, assist with Room to Read’s efforts on strengthening gender inclusion in our organizational practices across departments.

Technical and Logistical Support (30%)

  • In partnership with the Program Operations department, support internal communication and collaboration processes to streamline global GEP team participation in strategic & technical conversations with Country Offices as needed.
  • Under the Associate Director’s guidance, lead the complex process for updating and revising core GEP module content.
  • Support the Associate Director in providing technical guidance, capacity building, and program monitoring for the Girls’ Education Program in Room to Read’s Tanzania country office, as needed.  Potential for increased responsibility of supporting larger Africa portfolio as appropriate.
  • Provide logistical and programmatic support to the GEP team on multiple areas, including hiring of external consultants, coordinating regular calls and meetings within the global GEP team, etc..
  • Contribute to and complete other tasks and projects as a member of the larger PDTA departmental team, as needed.

Knowledge Sharing & Coordination (15%)

  • Manage existing, and support the creation of new, knowledge-sharing systems to facilitate communication and collaboration among all Room to Read country offices and programs globally.
  • Manage regular collection of program best practices, innovations, and compelling case stories from across Room to Read country offices for external and internal sharing purposes.
  • Organize regular internal communications (via email, newsletter, etc.) to provide the broader GEP team updates on strategic country and/or global GEP projects.
  • Collaborate across Room to Read departments (Program Operations, Finance, Development, Research, Monitoring & Evaluation, etc.) to support the Associate Director in routine program planning, budgeting, monitoring, and reporting processes, participating in regular global calls with other departments.

Development & Strategic Partnerships (15%)

  • Identify and support business development opportunities in collaboration with the global Development team as related to donor engagement, reporting, and proposal writing.
  • Collaborate with Development & Communications department on organizing internal/external events highlighting aspects of our Girls’ Education & Gender Equality Programming, such as for International Women’s Day, International Day of the Girl Child, webinars, etc.

Thought Leadership (10%)

  • In coordination with the Senior Director, GEP, provide support to thought leadership opportunities, including preparing presentations and writing op-eds, articles and other written pieces increasing Room to Read’s thought leadership on life skills, girls’ education and gender equality, in particularly with respect to financial literacy, and the link between book publishing, gender equality, and life skills.
  • Identify and represent Room to Read in external conferences, roundtable discussions, coalitions and other fora advancing girls’ education, life skills and gender equality, when appropriate.
  • Participate in internal Room to Read worldwide conferences, events, or subregional meetings to support countries’ programmatic needs.


Qualifications:

Required:

  • BA in a related field of study, e.g. gender equality, education, international relations, or related development sector;
  • Strong management and organizational skills, and experience managing multiple projects at the same time;
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of related professional experience in the international development field, with at least three years specifically on overseeing and managing programs in the field of gender equality, and/or education programs.
  • Experience working with civil society, multi-lateral institutions in the field of girls’ education and-or gender equality
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Experience delivering trainings as a lead trainer or technical coach and/or developing training materials
  • Experience in program design and/or developing technical program content and curriculum, preferred
  • Ability and desire to travel domestically and internationally if needed

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in a related field of study, e.g. gender equality, education, international relations, or related development sector
  • Experience and knowledge in one or more of the following fields: climate change, positive masculinity, distance learning; positive youth development; girl-centered learning; book publishing; multimedia production; psychosocial wellbeing, social-emotional learning, financial literacy
  • Experience managing projects and programs funded and implemented by a variety of bi-lateral, multi-lateral and private sector institutions
  • Prior experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization
