Position Overview:

Room to Read’s Development Director, North America, leads the New York and San Francisco based team responsible for fundraising from Individuals and Family Foundations (IFF) as well as Corporations and Foundations (CF) in the US and Canada. The Development Director, North America is also responsible for collaborating closely with the Global Partnerships and Marketing/Communications teams to support strategy for Planned Giving, Chapter networks and Annual Fund (AF) activities that impact fundraising in the North America market.

The Development Director, North America, is a member of the Development and Communication Department’s (DevCom) Department Leadership Team. This position is based in either New York City or San Francisco and reports to the Senior Director, International Business Development.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the market’s US$26MM+ annual revenue goal across IFF, CF, Annual Fund, Legacy and partnerships revenue segments

  • Inspire and lead a team of fundraisers in the US to raise more than US$13MM annually. Provide management and leadership to the North America development team consisting of four full-time staff whose collective primary responsibilities include donor management and soliciting donations, maintaining accurate donor records, financial management, organizing fundraising events, coordinating with local volunteer chapters and representing Room to Read throughout the region

  • Manage an individual portfolio of relationships with UHNW donors in the region with a goal of raising a minimum of US$3.5MM+ annually

  • In conjunction with other DevCom sub-teams, develop and implement North America’s annual fundraising goals and strategy, including (but not limited to): fundraising and awareness-raising events, marketing and communications strategy, pipeline development, annual fund, corporate fundraising, HNW/UHNW fundraising

  • Establish and monitor revenue goals for all areas of development in the North America region as well as revenue forecasting and reporting for North America throughout each year

  • Support the Executive Leadership Team and Regional Development Board as they represent Room to Read to various constituencies

  • Manage the North America Regional Boards in collaboration with CEO and Chief Development and Communications Officer

  • Manage strategy for signature fundraising events including an annual gala, working in conjunction with the Regional Board, to implement an ambitious growth strategy

  • Represent Room to Read at fundraising events, pipeline opportunities, and in donor meetings

  • As part of the DevCom Department Leadership Team, collaborate closely with the Senior Director, International Business Development on fundraising strategy, as well as with the Senior Director, Global Business Operations, Senior Director, Global Partnerships, and Senior Director, Marketing and Communications to support the overall performance of the department and achievement of annual goals



  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

  • Minimum 10 years work experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented organization with at least 5+ years of nonprofit development experience

  • History of dedicated volunteer activity and/or commitment to nonprofit organizations

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute major gift activities and success raising USD $2.5 – 3 million annually

  • Experience independently raising six and seven-figure gifts

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and nurture business development and administrative teams

  • History of dedicated volunteer activity and/or commitment to nonprofit organizations

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute business development activities

  • Proven ability to work strategically with senior executives

  • Strong presentation skills

  • Positive initiative and mature judgment

  • Highly organized and self-motivated

  • Able to balance competing priorities, complex situations and tight deadlines

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills in English

  • Ability to travel

  • Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people

  • Experience living or working internationally is a plus
