The Electrical (Solar) Engineer will be part of an exciting new opportunity at Sprague, helping to design, develop, permit, and implement solar energy systems across the New York and New England area, and beyond! Are you looking for the opportunity to be part of something new and exciting? Sprague is looking for someone who is going to help build a new solar energy division within the company. You will be a member of a newly formed team focused on integrating innovative solar energy system designs to off-set our own energy use and also to support the development of community solar energy projects.  Sprague is looking for your creativity in helping to develop everything from single & triple line diagrams, cable sizing, solar panel layouts on rooftops and open ground areas, to preparing complex engineering calculations, BOQs, and procuring electrical equipment. This is a unique opportunity to be part of something new, building it from the ground up, within the established energy industry.  

The desired candidate will have electrical engineering experience in utility scale solar projects, with strong experience in the following:

  • Conducting site visits to analyze existing electrical systems and interconnection points
  • Experience with Class I Division I and Class I Division 2 environments
  • Familiar with applicable OSHA and NFPA standards
  • Familiar with applicable NEC and IEEE/ANSI standards
  • Prepares complex engineering calculations such as: load flow, short circuit and reactive capability analysis (ETAP or SKM), Arc flash analysis (ETAP or SKM), Cable ampacity study (CYMCAP or equivalent), grounding analysis, AC-DC voltage drop calculations, VOC/ISC calcs, AC/DC Cable sizing.
  • Provide Bill of Quantities (BOQ) for estimating budgets, and review with construction/installation teams.
  • Developing procurement specifications for major equipment, including, but not limited to:
  1. Solar modules
  2. Trackers
  3. Racking piles
  4. Inverters
  5. Transformers
  6. SCADA
  7. Cable
  8. Cable management systems, etc.
  • Organizing and optimizing equipment and material quantities
  • Communicating with other departments to ensure an efficient installation process
  • Manage the interconnection applications for each new and existing solar projects.

Qualified candidates for this role will have the following:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering through an accredited college program
  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience
  • Experience with AutoCAD a must, Helioscope or similar preferred
  • A Professional Engineer designation is preferred but not required
  • Detailed design experience of solar projects strongly required.
  • Experience in arc flash, short circuit, coordination, grounding, and relevant studies is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Efficient time management in order to handle multiple projects simultaneously and with minimal supervision including prioritizing, organizing, and planning effectively to meet all deadlines
