Senior Director, Convention and Meeting Services


The AAP is currently working remotely with an anticipated return to work date of March 28, 2022.  The re-entry plan will be a hybrid approach.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer/SVP, Human Resources and Corporate Services

this Senior Director will:

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for the AAP portfolio of meetings.
  • Oversee all convention, meeting, and travel activities, including contract negotiations and the full execution and planning of AAP live, virtual, and hybrid meetings and special events.
  • Direct the AAP Conference Center meetings and oversee catering and cafeteria operations.
  • Deliver high impact events for members and attendees that leads to a transformative experience, significant ROI for the organization and partners, as well as increased member participation and engagement.
  • Lead the meetings and travel team to optimize work performance, including member satisfaction, overall budget management and financial goals.


Qualified candidates will possess the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, business, and/or hospitality management and professional certification (CAE, CMP, DES) in related field required.
  • At least ten 10 years’ related experience managing large city-wide conventions, meetings, and/or tradeshows with at least 5 years in a leadership role required, including experience with key cities, managing large budgets, and supervising staff.
  • Experience executing live, virtual, and hybrid meetings and advanced knowledge of the hospitality industry.
  • Experience interacting with VIP’s (eg, board members, executives, keynote speakers) and working for a non-profit/medical association strongly preferred.
  • Excellent negotiation, organizational, project management, critical thinking, interpersonal, diplomacy, and written/verbal communication skills required, as well as the ability to manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously, oversee a multi-million-dollar program budget and provide timely and accurate reporting to leadership.
  • Strong technical acumen essential with proficiency in MS Office, virtual meeting platforms (eg, WebEx, Teams, Zoom), and the ability to learn and apply new technologies.
  • Frequent travel and weekend work required, along with the need for flexibility in arranging work schedule to accommodate physicians’ availability.
