About the position 
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Maintenance Worker to support the Operations and Maintenance Division in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, curbs, sidewalks, gutters, storm drains, and related public works facilities. A valid California Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with Airbrake and Tank endorsements is highly desirable. The Public Works Department is accepting applications to fill seven (7) full-time Maintenance Worker I (Flex) vacancies.

Job Requirements

Education, Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and one year of skilled experience in public works related construction or maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

A Maintenance Worker I may be considered for advancement to Maintenance Worker II after demonstrating proficiency to perform the full range of duties of the latter class and obtaining a valid Class B Commercial driver's license. Proficiency criteria and the process for demonstrating performance at the levels established in the criteria are established jointly by hiring authorities and the Director of Human Resources, and are described in a separate document.

Typically, a Maintenance Worker I is expected to be capable of meeting the proficiency criteria within an 12-24 month period, depending on an individual's prior experience and progression in performing the full range of Maintenance Worker II duties as described in the established perform­ance criteria.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy: Class C for Maintenance Worker I; Class B Commercial for Maintenance Worker II.  A Class B Commercial license with Airbrake Endorsement required for some assignments.

Employees in this classification may be required to participate in call back or standby duty and are subject to be on-call, which may include a rotating schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
