Managing Editor, Open Access Journals

 

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is seeking a Managing Editor with strong project management skills to oversee the monthly production of our new Pediatrics Open Science journal and other assigned open access products. This position will consult with vendors, editors, executive editorial board, and staff related to the monthly management of the journal, and develop best practices around open access publishing, including meeting business growth objectives and maximizing revenue opportunities. This newly created role will join the Journal Publishing team in Itasca, IL, in the Chicago suburban area, and offers a hybrid work environment with 40% on site work. Some tasks include: 

  1. Oversee the monthly production of Pediatrics Open Science, and processing of manuscripts from original submission through final production. Assist with submission process and manuscript transfers from journals to the open access journal.
  2. Manage manuscript submission system for Pediatrics Open Science. Provide guidance regarding online submission systems and procedures, documentation, and editorial workflows.
  3. Deliver plans to grow, develop, and maximize the level of revenue and profitability of open access journals by defining annual targets and objectives.
  4. Work closely with the journal’s editors to provide support in determining editorial direction and special issues.
  5. Keep informed of, investigate, and document open access developments and analyze competitive journals, including Plan S Open Access Principles, international and U.S. government funding agencies, and academic institution open access policy requirements.
  6. Collaborate with relevant staff to ensure that open access products meet market expectations.
  7. Create and deliver annual presentations to AAP leadership and editors on open access industry changes and trends, including how the AAP will need to respond quickly to market challenges while also developing practical solutions that will drive revenue expectations.
  8. Identify new opportunities for open access titles and key performance indicators (KPI) to meet revenue objectives.
  9. Serve as the in-house expert on open access development in relation to international government funding policies and changes, institutional open access requirements, and US government requirements, including NIH (National Institutes of Health) guidance. Maintain an external focus by attending conferences and webinars and by participating in industry workgroup meetings to increase knowledge of open access initiatives.
  10. Manage related vendors to ensure adherence to monthly production and distribution schedules and compliance with AAP policies.
  11. Manage monthly online content to ensure accuracy of information. Ensure new and current manuscripts are processed in the peer-review submission system.
  12. Prepare agendas, scientific reports, slide presentations, and minutes for editorial conference calls, editor retreats, and editorial board meetings; prepare quarterly management reports. Present open access updates at meetings.
  13. Act as AAP primary liaison with vendors, consultants, editors, and editorial boards on assigned activities.
  14. Manage the editorial board nomination processes for the journal.
  15. Attend and plan the agendas for the virtual editorial board meetings.
  16. Conduct monthly editors’ meetings.
  17. Manage monthly budgets and provide reports to leadership as requested.
  18. Coach editors and editorial board on new open access policies.
  19. Cross-train on workflow processes for other journals.
  20. Update and maintain standard operating procedures.
  21. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications needed:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, publishing or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience required.
  2. At least three years’ related experience in publications/journal publishing, including experience in production, and editorial workflow. Direct management of open access journals or open access market/industry development strongly preferred. Experience with peer review systems, scientific/technical publishing, working with editorial boards, and budget management preferred.
  3. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, project management, written/verbal communication, presentation, analytical, and critical thinking skills required. Must be able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, work both independently and as part of a team, take initiative, effectively collaborate with various internal and external constituents, and promote and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Strong technical acumen with proficiency in MS Office and the ability to learn and apply new technologies; experience with online peer-review systems and virtual meeting platforms (eg, WebEx, Teams) preferred. Some travel and evening/weekend work are required, along with the need for flexibility in work schedule to accommodate physicians’ availability.
