The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the nation’s leading advocacy organization for children’s healthcare, is seeking a collaborative project manager to lead the operations of the Regional Pediatric Pandemic Network (RPPN). This newly created position will integrate telehealth efforts, disseminate knowledge, and support partnerships that ensure widespread integration of the medical home in disaster planning efforts.


As part of the Pediatric Population Health team at our Chicago suburb headquarters in Itasca, IL, this role has a hybrid working arrangement of 40% on-site. Some tasks include:

  1. Manage and lead strategic planning efforts for the RPPN Medical Home Domain, including administration, budgeting, planning, monitoring, evaluation, and program development.
  2. Lead relevant grant and cooperative agreement activities specific to the Regional Pediatric Pandemic Network.
  3. Collaborate with RPPN project managers to schedule, support, coordinate, and oversee implementation of QI collaboratives of the RPPN.
  4. Manage strategic alignment of the Medical Home domain with other RPPN domains by assessing needs of the Medical Home Domain and the needs of other domains across the network, sharing of resources, and identification of appropriate follow up to ensure connections between the Medical Home Domain and other teams.
  5. Work with the Medical Home Domain Steering Committee and Advisory Committee to conduct pandemic preparedness needs assessments.
  6. Represent the AAP at meetings with project officers, foundations, and other external partners on active public RPPN activities and develop reports for AAP leadership and external partners/funders as needed.
  7. Identify and develop methodologies for strategic collaboration with local, state, and national leaders of public and private programs, family organizations, professional associations, and related organizations across programs as requested by the Medical Home Domain and RPPN leadership.
  8. Lead the development, production, publication, and dissemination of materials including any newsletters, after-action discussions, evaluation, and promotional materials.
  9. Leverage the AAP reach by working with other AAP staff to provide pediatricians and other pediatric health professionals with knowledge and tools to support families in their communities during pandemics, and to improve access to care for children and their families with content developed through the RPPN.
  10. Manage assigned grant budgets and processing of expenditures and work with the AAP Finance staff to prepare required reports to the funders.
  11. Participate in AAP cross-functional teams related to disaster preparedness and response.


Qualifications needed:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in public health, health education, emergency management, or a related field required, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience. Master’s degree preferred.
  2. At least four years’ related experience in public health program planning, project management or program management and administration required, including leading teams, working with medical professionals, and budget management. Experience with grant management/reporting, disaster planning/recovery initiatives, and working with federal agencies highly desired.
  3. Excellent organizational, communication, diplomacy, critical thinking, interpersonal, project management, and verbal/written communication skills required. Must be able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, work both independently and as part of a team, take initiative, collaborate effectively with various internal and external constituents, and promote and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Strong technical acumen essential with proficiency in MS Office and the ability to learn and apply new technologies; knowledge of web collaboration platforms (eg, SharePoint) and virtual meeting platforms (eg, WebEx, Teams, Zoom) preferred. Some travel and evening/weekend work required, as well as the need for flexibility in accommodating physicians’ availability.
