Gateway is a custom developed clinical application and research database that is the foundation of The Hutch’s legacy in cancer research. As a member of the Gateway team, you will support a system that will enables a broad base of user data needs in a complex environment. The Gateway application is managed in the Hutch’s Center Information Technology organization.

Responsibilities

The Gateway Ingres Database Administrator is a member of a dedicated and motivated team supporting an application directly affecting both day-to-day cancer patient care and related critical research spanning multiple decades, working to alleviate the burden of cancer. A unique opportunity to apply your database administration skills, you will be an integral part of a team of developers, project managers and product owners, supporting a critical and complex legacy enterprise application while designing and developing an application for the future. Within this role you will build an understanding of the existing Gateway application and environment and ensure the ongoing support of patients, clinicians, and researchers. This position works in close collaboration with a dedicated Gateway team and reports to the Gateway Manager. 

This role spans the following areas:

  • Fulfill day-to-day operational tasks associated with database and application support
  • Troubleshoot complex issues with database platforms, databases, and applications
  • Monitor and report on database and application usage and availability; remove/delete old or obsolete files/resources to ensure systems function properly
  • Control and limit database access in compliance with data security policies and best practices to maintain data integrity
  • Modify and monitor scripts to perform ETL (extract, transform and load)
  • Monitor database servers and queries for high performance
  • Participate in software evaluations to determine upgrade possibilities
  • Ensure technical documentation and diagrams remain current and accurate
  • Comply with departmental processes, such as change management, problem management or incident management
  • Work with a dedicated information security team to evaluate and proactively address security vulnerabilities
  • Mentor teammates to build team knowledge to create a sustainable staffing environment
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 6-9 years of directly related experience
  • Experience working with Ingres and SQL
  • Strong analytical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Strong facilitation, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Competent use of desktop applications, including Microsoft Suite
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate effectively
  • Dedication to supporting the mission of the Hutch
  • Dedication to continuous learning


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous work experience working in an academic research setting.
  • Exceptional ability to understand complex data and to visualize the results through generation of figures and diagrams.
