The Aviation Warfare Subject Matter Expert provides support to the Next Generation Threat System (NGTS) effort at NAVAIR Patuxent River.

The candidate must be able to work closely with software engineers to provide a military aviator's perspective on air platform behavior and presentation to enhance fleet operator training experiences. The successful candidate must be familiar with the tactical employment of fixed wing and/or- rotary wing aircraft and have an understanding of threat and friendly system kill-chains. The candidate may serve as a customer liaison and advocate for software capability/feature inclusion based on customer requirements. The Aviation Warfare Subject Matter Expert provides insight and develops simulated entity (hostile and friendly) behaviors to enhance the training experience for NGTS’ warfighting customers.


  • CONOPS/CONEMPS development for simulated and constructive entity behavior during simulation / scenario execution
  • Research threat and friendly systems and their potential battlespace interactions
  • Work closely with software developers to ensure the proper representation of tactical capabilities in the simulation environment meet training community requirements
  • Act as liaison to fleet organizations, gathering their requirements for future NGTS iterations, ensuring the product meets customer needs, and providing face-to-face customer support, as needed
  • Apply subject matter expertise to assist in the development, design, implementation, evaluation, and planning of modeling and simulation tools and products


  • Bachelor's Degree and at least 8 years experience as aircrew on tactical aircraft
  • Prior military experience in the Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps serving as aircrew in tactical aircraft such as: EA-18G, EA-6B, P-3, H-60, F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18, B-52, B-1
  • Must have Active Secret clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance
  • Unique qualifications with specific platforms/weapons systems desired; USAF / USN Advanced Weapons School instructor, test pilot, tactics instructor, or any additional specialized qualifications or background is preferred
  • Experience with Strike, Electronic Warfare, or Maritime mission operations

Specific experience in at least four (4) of the following areas:

  • Carrier qualification
  • Combat experience
  • Flight experience in state-of-the-art glass cockpit
  • Flight experience in high- G-onset rate-capable aircraft
  • Operational flight time utilizing night vision devices
  • Night Attack Systems; Helmet mounted displays
  • Operational advisory/design review participation (OAG, NARG, ASAP, SEAL Team, PDR/CDR Team, TACAIR Night Strike Working Group)
  • Friendly and threat capability analysis and projection
  • Operational mission planning/tactics development.
  • Test and Evaluation project execution
  • Tactics Development and Evaluation (TAC D&E)
  • Automated Mission Planning Systems (i.e., TAMPS, JUMPS)
  • Weapons and Tactics Instructor School/Top Gun Graduate
  • Analytic experience, especially with friendly and threat capability analysis
  • CONOPS/CONEMPS Development and operational planning
  • Working knowledge of Aircraft Survivability Equipment and systems
  • Knowledge of the Defense Acquisition System
