The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the nation’s leading advocacy organization for children’s healthcare, is seeking a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) to manage the AAP coding technical assistance (TA) activities. This member facing role will track TA requests and respond to member inquiries; support the development of coding resources and companion educational activities; and contribute and provide coding expertise to initiatives related to health care delivery and finance transformation.
Hybrid working arrangement of 40% on-site at our Chicago suburb headquarters in Itasca, IL.

Some tasks include:
1. As primary staff for AAP coding TA and resource activities, research and provide AAP Fellows and their office staff accurate and timely answers to their coding queries.
2. Manage and inform updates to AAP coding publications, including the Coding for Pediatrics manual, the AAP Coding Newsletter, and the coding quick reference cards.
3. Work with the primary staff to the Committee on Coding and Nomenclature (COCN) to inform and develop pediatric coding policies.
4. Analyze how changes in Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD) guidelines may affect pediatric practices in order to educate members. Engage CHF team members as appropriate.
5. Assist in addressing payer issues and developing coding resources for payer advocacy.
6. Serve as primary staff for ICD-10-CM code development and implementation, including ICD-11 Pediatric Topic Advisory Group activities. This includes attending ICD Editorial Advisory Board and Coordination & Maintenance meetings to ensure proposals align with best practices for children, working with member stakeholders to develop and refine code proposals, and educating members toward effective implementation of ICD-10-CM codes.
7. Develop and maintain coding related educational resources for members, professional coders, and practice managers.
8. Manage content posted to the AAP Coding and Valuation web pages.
9. Contribute to health policy advocacy initiatives as needed.
10. Manage the development and production of the monthly column, “Coding Corner,” in AAP News.
11. Attend the RUC and CPT Editorial Panel meetings as needed.
12. Work with appropriate AAP staff to explore new revenue generating opportunities for AAP coding resources.
13. Manage content, faculty, and logistics of the AAP Coding Webinars.
1. Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public health, or related field discipline or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience required. Certified Professional Coder required.
2. At least three years’ related experience in physician office billing and coding operations required. Experience with practice management and working in a medical association highly desirable.
3. Understanding of CPT and ICD coding systems and billing procedures and the principles of the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule required. Excellent verbal/written communication, interpersonal, diplomacy, analytical, and critical thinking skills required. Must be able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, pay close attention to detail, take initiative, work both independently and as part of a team, collaborate effectively with various internal and external constituents, and promote and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Strong technical acumen essential with proficiency in MS Office and the ability to learn and apply new technologies; experience with virtual meeting platforms (eg, WebEx, Teams) preferred. Some evening/weekend work and travel required.
