 What you’ll be doing:

As the Director of Safety, you will be responsible for the development, support, execution and management of all Sprague safety management systems, programs, and policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day support to all areas of Sprague with regards to the interpretation of internal and regulatory requirements, training, policies, and procedures.
  • Review, modify, develop, and maintain company safety policies.
  • Identify best practices and lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce operational risk, increase safety awareness and improve safe work practices.
  • Work closely with safety committees at all of our terminals and locations to improve safety performance, remove hazards, mitigate risk, and achieve strategic safety goals.
  • Maintain and manage the Safety Training Program for all employees.
  • Conduct internal safety audits to ensure compliance with internal guidelines, policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices during site visits.
  • Lead incident investigation teams to determine root causes and implement corrective actions to avoid incident recurrence.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local, state, and federal regulators.
  • Review, develop and report on monthly and annual safety reporting key performance indicators.
  • Develop and implement short and long-term strategic safety plans to achieve desired safety related goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for the development and management of the annual safety budget
  • Be able to support and contribute as a member of the very energetic and diverse HSE & Sustainability team.

Qualified candidates for this role will have the following:

  • Experience in OSHA, DOT, EPA and State regulatory requirements necessary.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and compliance experience with OSHA regulations 1910, 1916, 1917 and 1926.
  • Professional HSE certifications are desirable (CSP, CHMM, REM, etc.).
  • Ten to fifteen years’ experience in safety and/or risk management.
  • Must have ability to develop excellent working relationships with people of varied backgrounds and levels of responsibility.
  • Highly motivated, attention to detail, and ability to solve technical and analytical problems.
  • Position based in Portsmouth, NH with significant field work and travel (approximately 50 percent but will vary depending on specific Sprague projects and operations).
  • Experience with Canadian regulations, USCG, marine oil terminal and bulk/break-bulk cargo operations strongly desirable.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in safety, risk management, industrial hygiene, engineering, or related field.
