Job Description

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the nation’s leading advocacy organization for children’s healthcare, is seeking a culturally sensitive global health educator to manage the Global Health Education Course (GHEC) and Global Health Education for Equity, Antiracism and Decolonization (GHEARD) projects directed at both members and international learners. This position will oversee the development of new global health curricula and ongoing program management, write grant applications to fund the development of new global health curricula, and conduct the field testing, implementation, and evaluation of curricula.   This role will coordinate and monitor international training as well as manage the activities of the Section of International Medical Graduates (SOIMG).

 

Hybrid working arrangement of 40% on-site at our Chicago suburb headquarters in Itasca, IL.

Some job duties include:

1.              Oversee implementation of the yearly GHEC. Oversee Steering Committee in curriculum development.  Liaise with simulation team to incorporate innovative learning and collaborate on expansion of simulation resources related to global health education. Liaise with education team in planning of live course. Oversee ongoing evaluation of the course for continued improvement and coordinate dissemination of results through presentations and publications.

2.             Oversee final stages of development and future innovation of the GHEARD curriculum and provide ongoing program management. Manage the Project Advisory Committee meetings and implementation activities. Manage field (beta) testing, implementation, evaluation of curricula, and dissemination of results.

3.             Identify the need for new curricula in global health education. Assess feasibility and cost, oversee program design and timelines for program development. Develop components, liaise with Education staff to execute dissemination via the AAP Learning Management System, create marketing plan, and implement training. 

4.             Manage implementation of global health programs, including logistics, registration, faculty identification, distribution of learning materials, continuing education accreditation, and course equipment. 

5.             Provide supervision for the coordination and monitoring of essential newborn care and clinical skills training programs conducted in low-, middle-, and high-income countries (e.g. iKMC advocacy and implementation).

6.             Assist in developing funding grant proposals and budgets towards the development of new global health curricula, field testing, implementation, and evaluation.

7.             Serve as a point of contact for those interested in implementing global health education. Foster connections with AAP members and support networking with in-country contacts for sustainable program administration.

8.             Assist in the pursuit of ethical approval, regulatory oversight of implementation activities, program evaluation, review and editing of publications, and dissemination of results related to global health training activities.

9.             Evaluate global health programming for comprehension at appropriate learning levels, consistency of style, educational design, institutional integrity, and compatibility with existing policies.

10.         Develop and implement Advanced Pediatric Life Support Global (APLS Global). Oversee Steering Committee in the curriculum development.  Develop and manage budget and customer service initiatives associated with the program.

11.           Develop and manage customer service initiatives with global health education courses and initiatives.

12.          Manage SOIMG and its key projects. Plan and organize quarterly conference calls and provide project updates as needed. Complete action items generated from the meetings and conference calls as assigned. Advise supervisor on agendas items and oversee meeting logistics. Coordinate communications with and regarding SOIMG activities, including websites, newsletters, grant management, overseas directory, policy and intents, and other new projects that arise.

13.          Develop and monitor assigned budgets and monitor monthly expenses, and provide reports as required.

14.          Manage development and expansion of assigned websites, social media, and course reporting database.

15.          Serve as a key staff contact for international activities at the AAP National Conference & Exhibition, including arranging meetings with other AAP staff, developing global health programs, and staffing section business meetings. Assist AAP staff in managing international guests.  

16.          Supervise and mentor assigned staff. Encourage a work environment that promotes inclusion and belonging of all staff. Support ongoing staff development, help set objectives, evaluate performance, and promote and enhance staff capacity in skills necessary to achieve goals. Ensure staff operate in a fiscally prudent manner, maintain confidentiality, operate with the highest ethical standards, and provide excellent service to members and volunteers.

17.          Work with global health staff to coordinate volunteer mentor activities.

18.          Participate in assigned teams to refine courses, offerings, services, and systems.

19.          Assist in coordinating and providing onsite support for relevant partner, editorial, and planning meetings. 

20.        Work with staff to analyze partner, mentor, and trainer queries and implement process improvements that increase productivity and service delivery. 

21.          Manage assigned budgets, prepare variance reports, and monitor and apply temporarily restricted funds.

 

Qualifications include:

1.              Bachelors’ degree in education, public health, or related discipline or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience required. Master’s degree preferred.

2.             At least five years related experience in managing/leading public health programs required, including training/educational programs, collaborating with external constituents, and budget management. Experience with adult or continuing education, international initiatives, needs assessment, writing federal or foundation grants/contracts, and working in a professional association strongly preferred.

3.             Excellent verbal/written communication, leadership, critical thinking, project management, interpersonal, and diplomacy skills required. Must be able to manage multiple complex priorities simultaneously, take initiative, lead cross-functional teams, manage budgets, coordinate logistical challenges of international programs, communicate with cultural sensitivity, collaborate effectively with various internal and external constituents, and maintain a positive and cooperative team-oriented work environment with a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion and. Strong technical acumen essential with proficiency in MS Office and the ability to learn and apply new technologies; knowledge of web editing software (eg, SharePoint), databases, virtual meeting platforms (eg, WebEx, Teams), and social media platforms preferred. Knowledge of foreign language(s) desirable. Domestic and international travel and evening/weekend work required.
